Hosting a Presentation

An excellent way of inspiring colleagues and raising the profile of your school is to host a Dolphin presentation and invite teachers from other schools. Presentations are most effective when pupils are involved in demonstrating the materials. Delegates can than see peer tutoring in action and ask questions of the pupils as well as receiving background information and advice for implementation.

Rob Porteous (author of Dolphin) runs demonstrations regularly in schools throughout the UK and would be delighted to work with you to organise an event.

The most effective model so far has been to organise a twilight session in conjunction with the local authority (or in the case of Independent schools, with the appropriate Independent school organisation).
  • The authority takes responsiblity for advertising the event.
  • The host school is responsible for:
    • organising refreshments for delegates
    • arranging for pupils to be available for the demonstration
    • supervising pupils and arranging for their collection by parents.
  • Rob trains the pupils and takes responsibility for the presentation.
Ideally Rob would arrive in the school at midday and work with selected pupils in several classes during the afternoon, training them in the peer tutoring method with the latest materials. These pupils would get a chance to practise on classmates during the afternoon and would then tutor new pupils during the demonstration itself. The demonstration could be followed by a Powerpoint or overhead projector presentation, after which delegates would have the opportunity for hands on.

The content for the afternoon can be selected to fit with the topics the pupils are working on in class, so that the skills learned are integrated directly into the curriculum.

If you would like further information or would be interested in hosting such an event, please get in touch.

"We are very enthusiastic about the Dolphin System. Through using it, our children are now much more fluent in the use of computer language and more aware of the variety of things that a computer can do. Pupils are working well together within their own classes using the peer tutoring system, and many are very keen to move on to teaching other classes.

Our classroom assistants and Support for Learning assistants have also started using Dolphin for their own development, thus spreading the benefits.

Word is spreading about what we are doing and we now have a steady stream of visitors from other primary, secondary and special schools in the area coming to see the Dolphin System in action."
